SigFox Raised €100 Million from Telco, Industrial & Financial Partners
French IoT network technology provider SigFox has announced today a large fund raising of €100 million to accelerate its deployment in Europe, Asia, North and South America.

This round of funding includes a large range of investors: telecom operators: Telefónica, SK Telecom and NTT Docomo Ventures, a financial partner: Elliott Management Corporation and industrial partners: GDF SUEZ, Air Liquid and Eutelsat.

With deployments in France, Spain, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom, SigFox’s low power, low bandwidth wide area network already covers 1 million sq kilometer.

SigFox’s wireless technology is based on Ultra Narrow Band (UNB), which requires 1,000 times less antennas than GSM to cover the same surface. The network is however only designed for low throughput transmission (between 10b/s and 1kb/s).

Thanks to its low cost, the Sigfox network represents an interesting opportunity for the connectivity of GPS tracking systems that cannot afford the cost and battery life of GSM connectivity. Some early adopters such as Nigiloc or Whistle have already embedded SigFox modules in their products.
