Last week NAVTEQ announced significant developments in its map coverage of India that now has 1.28 million kilometers of road network and 6.25 million Points of Interest.

NAVTEQ increased its India map by over 80% to 4,200+ cities in two quarters.

The digital map provider also offers some of its most advanced visual content such as Motorway Junction Objects, Sign-as-Real, Enhanced Junction Views and 3D Landmarks, currently available in over 25 cities in India.

In addition NAVTEQ Natural Guidance is available in 14 cities; Destination Maps (indoor maps) is also available in 150 malls across 17 cities.

Not a long time ago local digital map provider MapmyIndia had a significant advance, but this advantage has reduced drastically now. MapmyIndia currently(Feb. 2012) offers 1.8 Million kms, 4,500 cities and 6.21 million POIs, not a huge difference.

NAVTEQ has its largest worldwide map production center in Mumbai with a staff of around 600 workers serving both local and international database creation and maintenance.
