Microsoft Virtual Earth signs up WaveMarket
North American LBS provider WaveMarket yesterday announced a multi-year collaboration to enhance its location and privacy platform, Veriplace, with Microsoft Virtual Earth technology.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Microsoft Virtual Earth to offer our developers powerful mapping, routing, and geocoding functionality for their location-aware applications,” said Tasso Roumeliotis, WaveMarket’s CEO.

“The pairing of the Microsoft Virtual Earth platform with WaveMarket’s Veriplace Location Aggregation platform offers web, WAP, and mobile application developers a very powerful toolset for building location-aware applications,” added Chris Sampson, director of Virtual Earth at Microsoft Corp.

The Veriplace Location Aggregation platform is already available to developers on U.S. wireless operator Sprint. In addition to Veriplace, this collaboration brings Virtual Earth mapping technologies to WaveMarket’s Family Locator commercial deployments on Sprint Nextel, Alltel, Bell Mobility and other carriers outside the United States - such as Vivo in Brazil.

This agreement is bad news for deCarta which powered the back-end location server of many WaveMarket’s products thus far; even if, wrote Tasso Roumeliotis in an email to GPS Business News: “We still use deCarta in some of our products and continue to think very highly of their competence as a GIS partner.”
