Some critics say using HTML as a Graphical User Interface (GUI) language, JavaScript as a programming language and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) as a layout language is architecturally unsound.

They also claim it will lead to spaghetti code applications, and will take HTML5 applications longer to develop and cost more money to build than comparable native applications.

Bolstad admitted there is some basis to the claims: “That you can do certain things today if you go with Flash or Silverlight, or write a native iPhone application that maybe is a bit hard to achieve if you write a web application? There's some truth to that. But that's changing.”

He said there is an ongoing effort to develop specifications and features in browsers that offer the same capability for interesting user-interface development.

“If you look, for instance, at Flash or the native application environment on the iPhone you get a lot for free there as a developer,” he said.

“They have done a really good job of packaging things up. With not too much effort you can develop something that looks really nice but of course you end up with something that only runs there.

“Well, there's a lot happening in this space on the user-interface side and the Javascript performance side.

“Our goal is clear and we make no secret of that. We want to provide a platform that has all the capabilities of the native application environment but based on open web standards.”

While there are those that reckon native apps will “kill” the web, Bolstad said he didn't believe that would be the case.

“For certain applications it's practical to have a very dedicated application that can be accessed with one or two touches instead of going to a website,” he said.

“But for a lot of other things that are distributed as apps today there's no reason why they need to be applications. It's not that black and white.”
