HERE Strikes Deal With Samsung, Brings Maps & Navi to Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung and Nokia HERE have inked a licensing agreement where Galaxy smartphones owners will be able to download free of charge an app that offers maps, driving and walking turn-by-turn guidance as well as transit directions.

The coverage of the app is very extensive with maps in 200 countries, navigation in 100, traffic in 40 and transit maps and directions in more than 750 urban areas across more than 40 countries.

As usual HERE maps handles well offline maps with the possibility to download entire countries or regions and search or navigate when offline.

The app is also integrated with Glympse to share your location to family and friends for a precise amount of time.

HERE also works within the framework of Samsung Car Mode, an app specifically designed for in-car use that simplifies the user interaction with essential options: calling, messaging, music and directions. All functions, including inputting a direction in the navigation interface, are voice activated.

The HERE smartphone app is also tightly integrated with the Samsung Gear S navigation app (read here).

“The app will be made available for download from the Samsung GALAXY Apps store when the Samsung Gear S hits stores,“ HERE said in a press release.

Significant Win for HERE
This agreement with Samsung is a very significant win for HERE. During the second quarter 2014 -even if it lost market share - Samsung sold one in four smartphones worldwide (75 million out of 300 million), more than the combined market share of its three followers Apple, Huawei and Lenovo…

While Microsoft is still the leading mobile licensee of HERE, Samsung could easily beat that. Initially the HERE app will be available from the GALAXY Apps store. It is no clear yet if moving forward the app could be embedded on all Samsung smartphones which would therefore represent a bigger licensing deal.

HERE financial earnings in the coming quarters will tell us how much this new deal will be helping the bottom line.
