Yandex Selects NAVTEQ Data for Mapping Portal Outside Russia

Yandex, the leading Russian internet portal and search engine, has selected NAVTEQ map data to power Yandex.Maps outside of Russia.

"Our association with NAVTEQ, the leading map content provider, will help us take Yandex.Maps to the level of a comprehensive, all-purpose mapping service that can answer questions about countries throughout the world. We already have a happy experience sourcing map content from NAVTEQ. The detailed map of Turkey launched last year was the first map we licensed from NAVTEQ," said Maria Orlova, head of Yandex.Maps Production and Quality Control Service.

In Russia Yandex is relying on its own map data production and on some local partners. Yandex got its own team of cartographer onboard in 2010 with the acquisition of a company called GIS Technologies. Since 2010 Yandex is also benefiting from user-generated content having launched People’s Map, a service that allows users to draw maps over high resolution satellite images.
