According to Gerry Hinds, Vice-President Mobile at TomTom: "Our Speed Cameras service is already powered by a 1.6 million strong community of drivers. That’s everyone using the service on their navigation device, in-dash navigation system or smartphone.“
TomTom however does not provides specifics about the engagement of such community.
In an earlier article (read here) we pointed out the unsuccessful launch of this app last May based on data from web app ranking monitor Appannie.com. With this relaunch that includes a one year free service TomTom is clearly changing its approach to this market.
Initially TomTom forgot that mobile speedcam warning is all about having a very active community sharing camera locations. It definitely takes time to build such a community and it requires serious marketing efforts to nurturing it before starting to monetize it.
