TeleCommunication Systems which provides LBS infrastructure and white label navigation solutions to wireless operators has announced last weeek at the CTIA trade show the availability of its NAVBuilder SDK as a cross carrier LBS platform.
NAVBuilder enables developers to integrate features such as local search, mapping, directions and other location features into their applications to use on Android, BlackBerry, BREW and iOS devices. Deals and coupons are available on Android, BlackBerry, and BREW devices.
TCS' NAVBuilder consists of LocationKit, MapKit and mobile deals and coupon APIs.
MapKit provides an embeddable map interface through a set of functions that enable applications to display map imagery within windows and views. The interface can annotate maps with points of interest, local deals and coupons.
MapKit also provides directions, custom layers and other custom information and supports the device's native gestures (such as pan and zoom). Geocoding and reverse geocoding services are included in the SDK, as well as a set of local search APIs.

With this launch this is the first time TCS provides such a cross carrier product. There is unfortunately nothing really revolutionary in this offering, apart probably the support of BREW which might appeal to some developers and is not very common in the current cross app development tool landscape. But NAVBuilder does not support Windows Phone 7, a platform that is becoming more interesting these days.
The advantage of NAV Builder is relatively slim compared to what is already offered on popular cross platform development tools such as PhoneGap or Appcelerator.
