South African wireless operator Vodacom (23 million mobile subscribers) now offers Telmap Navigator free to all in South Africa, both Vodacom subscribers and non-subscribers. Android and Blackberry are the two platforms available today and the iPhone version is to follow shortly.
Telmap has been partnering with Vodacom since 2007 for the Vodafone Sat Nav system on Blackberry. In South Africa Telmap is also providing its navigation system to Cell-C (7.4 million mobile subscribers) that is available since November 2011 under the “Cell C Xplorer” brand.
This announcement once again illustrates the changing paradigm in mobile navigation where wireless operators are no more a direct source of revenue to navigation software vendors but acting as an audience provider, a platform to build awareness and downloads.
