Snocator uses interactive GPS trail maps to show users exactly where they are on the mountain - with all nearby lifts, runs, lodges, terrain parks, etc. Users can also check snow reports, mountain cams and weather forecasts to get up-to-date information on their favorite resorts as they plan their next ski vacation, or just their afternoon on the slopes.
Snocator was built using data from NAVTEQ, Mountain Dynamics (SnowRanger ski resort maps) and snocountry.com. Snocator offers detailed information for all major ski resorts in the U.S. and Canada and works anywhere users have a data signal or Wi-Fi connection. In future releases, Useful Networks is expected to let users track their runs and find friends and family on the mountains (Useful Networks is also the developer of “Sniff”, a location-based social networking application).
Snocator costs $5.99 as one time download from the iPhone App store, but ultimately Useful Networks expects to monetize it in new ways, because “[it] provides a way for ski resorts and outdoor brands to engage consumers in a completely new way”, said the Company. “With the ability to deliver targeted ads and coupons, Snocator can be offered as a sponsored or subscription service to skiers, snowboarders, and mountain enthusiasts of all stripes”.
