Skyhook wants to patch poor Nokia location performance
Boston-based Skyhook Wireless announced today the release of Maps Booster on the Nokia Ovi Store ($2.99), an application said to “dramatically improve the speed and accuracy of location results on any S60 Nokia handset”.

Maps Booster is replacing Nokia’s location platform (A-GPS) with Skyhook Wireless’ location software (a combination of A-GPS, cell-iD and Wi-Fi triangulation). Even if Nokia has launched its own cell-ID and Wi-Fi system for its most recent phones it does not seem this new location platform will get to older models anytime soon which leaves Skyhook with tens of million customers (for example users of the best-seller Nokia N95).

“With such high price tags, we think all features of Nokia smartphones should work perfectly,” said Kate Imbach, director of marketing and developer programs at Skyhook Wireless. “Maps Booster, finally, will make the location on any Nokia S60 device work just as well as location on the iPhone.”

Skyhook tried for several years to sell its Wi-Fi technology to Nokia but the Finnish decided to do it by themselves, instead of Apple who is relying on the Boston company for the iPhone.
