Shopkick Recorded 5 Million Walk-Ins to Partner Stores in December
Many companies are trying to close the loop between smartphones and brick and mortar stores, but Palo Alto-based shopkick is particularly interesting at that level and some statistics unveiled by the company today are demonstrating that.

Shopkick is a mobile shopping app that rewards customers for walking in a partner store, scanning barcodes and even buying product in-store with a linked VISA card. The virtual currency, called “Kicks“, can be traded for store gift cards, songs or donations to charities.

Shopkick uses a proprietary indoor location technology, shopkick Signal - an inaudible sound emitted from a device located in each participating retailer - to verify that a user is really in a participating store when using the mobile application.

Today the company announced to have reached 3 million active users and 5 million walk-ins alone in December 2011. APP users have performed 10 million product scans, up from 7 million in August 2011 and 3 million in February 2011.

The company also said that during the 2011 holiday shopping season, shopkick users interacted with stores through the app more than 3.1 million times per day on average, up from just over 1 million in August 2011.

High Potential User’s Demographic
According to shopkick, 64 percent of all users are now women. More than half of female users have kids. The average shopkick user is 30 years old. Less than 8 percent of all users are younger than 18.

Shopkick also said that more than 4,000 individual stores across multiple retailers (Best Buy, Macy’s, Target, Toys-R-us, etc.) and 250 of the largest U.S. malls have fully deployed shopkick's technology.
