Pioneer AppRadio Gets Navigation App from NNG; App Offering Remains Small
Pioneer aftermarket head unit AppRadio is finally getting an additional choice of navigation application for Europe, Australia and New Zealand in the name of Navgate Drive, developed by NNG.

The 2-DIN size auto radio features a 6.1-inch capacitive screen and utilizes the processing power, storage capacity, network connectivity and apps of the iPhone 4 and iPod touch (4th generation) as the primary source for its information and entertainment capabilities. The AppRadio itself costs €379 (a professional installation is required). and Navgate drive is available for €79.99 (45 European countries).

Starving for Apps
At launch (summer 2011) the solution only had one compatible navigation software, Motion X GPS Drive, but this one is only available in the United States.

In September 2011 Navmii issued a compatible version of its NavFree software that covers many more regions. But Navmii is using OpenStreetMap data, perhaps not the best option for the likely demanding customers having installed this head unit.

As of today, besides the native iPhone apps and these navigation options, only a few third party products for each region are able to run on the AppRadio screen.

The limited number of apps compatible with this device illustrate the upcoming challenge faced by car makers and car infotainment vendors to convince app developers to customize their software for a limited audience. The app store model unfortunately does not work for small volumes.
