Persistent Systems Acquires Openwave’s Location Business
Last week, Persistent Systems, a company that specializes in software development outsourcing, announced the acquisition of the location business from Openwave Systems. The financials of the transaction were not disclosed.

Openwave’s location business unit was providing commercial and emergency (E911/E-112) location-based services infrastructure to wireless operators.

In 2010 ABI Research credited Openwave with five percent market share on this LBS infrastructure market dominated by Ericsson (28%), Nokia Siemens Networks (18%) and TCS (21%). (Read more here2787 on that topic). According to ABI Research, Openwave had 6% of this market in 2008.

According to Berg Insight “an estimated 30 percent of the mobile network operators worldwide have now deployed at least some type of basic location platform. Additional deployments and updates of existing platforms can be expected in most markets in the coming years, primarily driven by government mandates since commercial LBS increasingly rely on alternative location sources including GNSS, Wi-Fi location and third party Cell-ID databases.“
