Nokia's Terminal Mode: "we are not here to play the game alone"Interview with Vesa Luiro, Director Automotive at Nokia
At the Geneva Motor Show last week, Nokia introduced "Terminal Mode", a technology that has a chance to revolutionize the connectivity between cars and phones and breach the gap of product life cycles between the mobile and the automotive industry.
Terminal Mode allows a seamless connectivity between cars and handsets, permitting to use mobile applications and content through cars' infotainment systems. Nokia has been working with the Consumer Electronics for Automotive working group (CE4A), an industry body made of German car manufacturer to standardize this technology which has been developed in collaboration with Nokia Research Center, Palo Alto. At the show Nokia made several partnerships announcements, including: - Partnership between Nokia and Alpine Electronics (read our previous story here) to highlight integration of smartphone music and media services with in-car audio systems using Terminal Mode. - Partnership between Nokia and Harman Becker to demonstrate integration of navigation services with in-car infotainment systems using Terminal Mode. - Integration of Fiat’s Blue&Me platform with Nokia smartphones. - Valmet Automotive shows electric concept car called Eva that includes Terminal Mode technology. Later in the week, at the "Navigation Day @ CeBIT" conference, GPS Business News met with Vesa Luiro, Director Automotive at Nokia who lead the team behind the "Terminal Mode" project.
