New TMC Traffic Launched in Ireland
TrafficNav, the Budapest based traffic information provider yesterday demonstrated its latest TMC service offering in Ireland. The new service will be commercially available from January 2010, first for Dublin, then to be rolled out for the entire country.

The demonstration was held at Dublin City Council, whose Traffic Control Centre will be the main source of traffic information for Dublin. With access to more than 200 cameras, direct contact with the local police, feedback from Dublin Bus and members of the public, the City Council is said to have the most accurate, up to the minute picture of Dublin City traffic. In addition, TrafficNav will be generating traffic flow information based floating car data (FCD).

TrafficNav is using its own TMC location table for Ireland, featuring over 10,000 coded locations. The broadcasting service is provided by RTÉ Networks Limited.

“TrafficNav strongly believes in the tried and tested technology of RDS-TMC” says Laszlo Heckenast, managing director of TrafficNav. “It provides robust nationwide coverage and can be offered without any ongoing cost to the end user, which is a very important factor in a market under tremendous price pressure.”

Yesterday’s demonstration was held on devices manufactured by MapMaster, one of the first PND manufacturers to sign up for the service. MapMaster’s e Royaltek sourced hardware features the Igo8 navigation software from NavNGo, and offers full TMC capabilities in Ireland.

TrafficNav is currently in talks with several major manufacturers to facilitate the availability of the service. Many existing users will also be able to update/upgrade their device or navigation software to receive the TMC service.

TrafficNav Kft was established in 2007 and is operating nationwide TMC services in Hungary and Slovenia, and is to launch further services in 2010. Backed by IT services provider Nokia Siemens Networks Trafficom, its major clients include TomTom, Garmin Hungary, Navigon, Navon and NavNGo.
