NAVTEQ: 4,605 Indoor Location Mapped
On the heels of Google (read here) announcing they have mapped 10,000 indoor locations, Nokia Location & Commerce (i.e. NAVTEQ) announced to have a database of 4,605 indoor venues mapped.

These location include mostly shopping malls, but also retail stores, airports, and transit hubs – in 38 countries. Already, Bing Maps has implemented about half of this location content last month into their maps. Nokia Maps is said to “follow soon.“

The race for indoor mapping and location is definitely heating up.

Now the question is not only to have this content available but also to have an indoor location available on your mobile phone to position you on these indoor maps.

Nokia research center has been working for quite a long time on indoor positioning, but as far as we know the technology selected is based on Bluetooth low energy beacons - which have not been commercially deployed yet.

In comparison, the Google approach - probably less accurate than Nokia - has the advantage to work already in their 10,000 locations.
