Currently, off-road navigation experienced by outdoor enthusiasts only takes users from point A to point B without regard to any natural or manmade obstacles between the two points. Primordial’s Ground Guidance application allows users to access a meandering route that avoids dense forest, lakes and rivers, steep inclines, and other natural hazards, leading users to their destinations in the most effective way possible. This new kind of off-road navigation software brings the convenience of the on-road software: finding the best route instead of guessing how to get from waypoint A to waypoint B.
Initially designed for the US Army
Primordial is a private company located in the United States. Incorporated in May 2002, it has executed contracts with the United States Army Topographic Engineering Center (TEC) and United States Army Movement Tracking System (MTS). Its off-road guidance software which was primarily designed for outdoor battlefield has been customized for civilian use.
Ground Guidance determines best path routes through off-road terrain by analyzing land cover, elevation, and aerial photo databases. Ground Guidance Handheld presents a moving map display on a pocket-sized GPS and overlays routes on aerial photos and topographic maps.
Magellan’s Triton users will be able to purchase regional content to activate the off-road navigation capability. For current Triton users, a free upgrade will be available through VantagePoint, the Magellan desktop application that enables users to manage and expand the content on their GPS device.
