NAVTEQ today announced its selection by Centrl to enable its location-aware social network with LocationPoint, its location-based advertising service. Centrl (previously called Unype), a start-up company based in New York City, is a social networking aggregator which gives mobile users a single, location-aware interface to networks such as Facebook, MySpace, Ning, Orkut, Bebo, Hi5 and Friendster. Centrl conveniently let users login to Centrl through their existing social network. The application is available on the iPhone, Android and Blackberry platforms and has gathered over 400,000 users to date.

With LocationPoint merchant locations are displayed on the map. In addition, merchant services and special offers can be advertised with rich graphical promotions and mobile coupons, as well as engaging calls to action including click-to-call, route and text. For example, Centrl users on-the-go looking for nearby friends and a place to meet can view offers from nearby merchants such as coffee shops and restaurants.

This deployment is the first official announcement of a LBS application partner by NAVTEQ LocationPoint, even if the mapping company is said to be working with Loopt to enable location-based advertising.
