LBS shopping applications get exposure in the U.S.
This week two location-based shopping applications were given particular exposure in the United States. The first one, Slifter, from a company called GPShopper, was the winner of the Tele Atlas Maps in Apps 2007 contest according to the ballots casted on the Tele Atlas booth at CTIA in October. “The Tele Atlas Innovators Series ‘Maps in Apps’ contest provided Slifter with great exposure to key industry players, as well as users,” said GPShopper CEO and Founder Alex Muller. Slifter is a mobile local product search application that employs GPS technology to find products at neighboring retail locations. Its database encompasses 100 million products at over 50,000 retail locations. With Slifter shoppers can save items to a shopping list, and share their finds by sending product information to their friends' and families' mobile shopping lists. Slifter is currntly available for download for $1.99 per month on the Sprint network and for free on Nokia Symbian S60 Smartphones.

The second one was revealed when uLocate Communications – the company behind the GPS widget platform WHERE - announced that Yokel is one of the three winners of its developer contest. Yokel is a location-enabled web shopping portal that helps consumers find the availability and pricing of products in nearby retail stores based on their current location(a postcode on the web, GPS coordinates on the mobile widget). Yokel allows users to search for virtually any type of item in its database that includes over 300,000 stores and millions of products. Its service is now available on the WHERE platform for use by customers of wireless operator Boost, Alltel and Sprint.

ShopLocal.com, a well known player in this field (through circular promotions and website), had already a GPS widget on WHERE since August. It allows consumers to access to current promotions available in their local communities whether they are shopping online or in store. WHERE costs $2.99/month, then all widgets are free.
