INRIX’s predictive technology assists consumers in anticipating conditions on major roads for the next few minutes, the next several hours, or up to five days in advance. The company delivers dynamic predictive traffic based upon Bayesian statistical analysis models integrated with real-time traffic information, weather forecasts, event schedules and a variety of other variables.
INRIX Traffic for Windows Mobile gives customers a variety of interesting features, including some useful panning and zooming options; daily commuters will probably enjoy the “Traffic compared to normal” feature that highlights particular problems on their route.
INRIX's Key competitor, Traffic.com, recently acquired by Navteq, offers since November last year its information through a WAP website, but with more limited features, in 50 markets.
The predictive element in this new Inrix offering is definitely a key differentiator. Thilo Koslowski, Vice President and Lead Automotive Analyst at Gartner, was recently highlighting this topic to GPS Business News: “just having traffic information - even if it is real time and collected from floating car data - doesn't necessarily mean that automatically you have a better option to get faster from point A to point B. There are times when you don't have any other choices because traffic jams are everywhere. At that point there is a real risk to disappoint the consumers. So the big question is how you really leverage the traffic information in the most meaningful, most impactful way. The way to do this is by offering this information well ahead when you are planning your route”. (Read the full interview here)
This consumer application is rather a marketing tool than a core revenue stream. Indeed, INRIX is mainly a Business to Business provider of traffic data solutions to wireless navigation platforms and application developers including TeleNav, deCarta, eMbience, MobileGates and is available as a white-label offering for wireless carriers. On the automotive market Inrix has recently signed with BMW and Mini for a RDS TMC solution.
