Monetization and stickiness
With Latitude Google is also definitively closing the door to a subscription-based business model for friend finder solutions, which was how Loopt started two years ago. Therefore advertising is the rule and, obviously, Google has a big competitive edge here. Additionally Google also made the tactical decision to tie this friend finder application to its mapping and local search product for which it is already conducting location-based advertising trials (read more here1173). Latitude is going to bring more stickiness to Google Maps, hence more CPMs to sell to advertisers.

Note: In addition to the launch of Latitude, Google has updated many features within this Google Maps 3.0 version. As an example, owners of Nokia N series phones can now take advantage of Wi-Fi location, pedestrian navigation, Street View, mass transit information (where available) and reviews for points of interest.
