GlobalMotion/Everytrail Acquired by TripAdvisor
Palo Alto based LBS start-up GlobalMotion Media Inc., that runs the EveryTrail service was acquired by Expedia-owned TripAdvisor , the company said on Friday. EveryTrail is a GPS-enabled publishing platform to share travels and create outdoor tours and city guides for mobile devices. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Every day, more people are opting to use mobile apps as a way of consuming travel information," said Adam Medros, vice president of global product for TripAdvisor. "EveryTrail bolsters our continued commitment to grow TripAdvisor's mobile offering, and enable travelers to access walking tours, city guides and hiking trails directly from their smartphones."

TripAdvisor was relatively late to launch a mobile presence - in March 2010 - with a mobile website, then apps for the iPhone, Android, Nokia, and Palm smartphones, as well as the iPad. This acquisition will amplify its presence on mobile with a well working business model as EveryTrail mixes user-generated free content with branded (such as Fodor’s) and non-branded tours that are paid content.

In September 2010 EveryTrail had 200,000 users in its community and the company was profitable with a staff of six people. A part of the company business was about licensing its technology platform to corporate customers, such as the North face, REI (outdoor retail), Toyota, BF Goodrich, and Globalstar (for the SPOT locator product).

In January 2010 GlobalMotion had raised $1 million in funding in a Series A round lead by The Band of Angels along with a group of domestic and international private investors.
