On May 16, Japanese navigation vendor Fujitsu Ten released a new iPhone application in Japan that works in conjunction with its ECLIPSE car navigation systems (AVN-ZXO2i and AVN-ZO2i) and uses the front and back camera of the smartphone to bring an augmented reality experience to the dashboard.
Through connecting to a FUJITSU TEN car navigation system (the cord is an optional purchase), this application can superimpose route information such as destination direction and turns on top of live-action images shot with the iPhone camera on the car navigation display. The front camera of the iPhone is used to display a view of the back seats, for example for checking kids activity.
While it may sound a bit “gadget“, this iPhone use just illustrate how in-dash navigation can leverage sensors found on smartphones in unique and innovative ways.
