The Ford-branded nüvis will feature a custom splash screen and a database of Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealerships and Quick Lane™ service centers across the US. The units will be sold in a special Ford Official Licensed Product branded retail box and Ford dealerships will display interactive point-of-purchase displays and collateral materials.
This announcement is a big move from a key US automaker: this is a first at this scale. So far the dealership channel for the PND sales has been small in the US. In Europe TomTom has set up various deals with automakers such as Seat, Citroën, Nissan and Volkswagen. Nevertheless the sales of PND through car dealerships in Europe remains low at about 2% of the total sales, consumer electronics stores and supermarkets are the key channels.
