Falk Intros New Mobile Apps, Goes Freemium
German navigation provider Falk has debuted a new version of its mobile navigation software that is now available both for iOS and Android in Germany. This new version, that continues to be based on ALK’s software, is available in two flavours: a free mapping app (that can be upgraded to a navi version), and a 2D, voice-guided navigation app that costs €19.99 for German speaking countries.
The European version (43 countries) costs €34.99. These paid versions include Bing local search, 5 days weather forecast, Facebook check-in and Twitter integration and local content from Wikipedia. Four optional packages can be bought to improve the app, via in-app purchase. “3D Advanced“ (€8.99) offers features such as bird’s eye view, text to speech, lane assist and find my car, a reminder that pinpoint where you parked your car. The “Optimal Routes“ package (€8.99) offers three alternative routes to choose from as well as the option to select special routes for RV, motorcycle or bike. The chosen route can also be modified directly on the map with the finger. “Active Traffic“ (€7.99) is a 12 months subscription to real-time traffic and “Fuel Prices“ (€7.99) is also a 12 months subscription.
Tough market
With this new offer Falk is getting closer to NAVIGON’s price scheme that started this trend of cutting navigation features in bits available via in-app purchase. However, NAVIGON Select Telekom, exclusive to Deutsche telekom subscribers does offer free 2D turn-by turn, voice guided navigation while it costs €19.99 with Falk. Needless to say that the “free“ competition does not limit to NAVIGON. Indeed, 02 Germany has the free Telmap Navigator and Vodafone also has its free Find&Go (also by Telmap), not to mention Navfree and Skobbler, both free but with Openstreetmap data. Definitely a tough market to be in. Thursday January 26, 2012
