Seiko Epson Corporation yesterday announced its upcoming entry in the sporting goods market with a first GPS-enabled wrist watch that is claimed to be the lightest (50g) despite offering 12 hours of battery life with GPS on.
While it might not be very well known, Epson has been producing GPS chipsets for many years.
This new watch is also said to be water resistant up to 5 bars, or 50 meters of water, unlike many GPS watches available today that are only rated IPX7 (1m of water for 30 minutes).
Expected to hit the shelves before the end of 2012 in Japan, the product is going to compete against a number of existing and new entrants in this growing market: Garmin, Timex, Polar, Nike/TomTom, Magellan, Motorola, to name just a few.
