CTIA: NAVTEQ and TeleNav sign multiyear map deal

CTIA: NAVTEQ and TeleNav sign multiyear map deal
Digital map maker NAVTEQ and mobile navigation provider TeleNav have announced today at CTIA an agreement under which NAVTEQ will extend and expand an existing relationship to supply global digital maps.

TeleNav provides services for most of the major North American wireless carriers and was ranked as the largest wireless services navigation provider in North America by Nielsen Mobile in 2008 (Nielsen Mobile Applications Report - Q4 2008).

NAVTEQ and TeleNav embarked on a relationship in 2002 when TeleNav selected NAVTEQ to supply map data. With this new multi-year, multi-country agreement, NAVTEQ will offer map coverage in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Europe. The deal also allows TeleNav the rights to use NAVTEQ map data with core and extended Points of Interest (POIs).

The press release is not mentioning any exclusivity so it would not be surprising to see TeleNav continuing to work with Tele Atlas with some wireless operators. In addition, Shotgun, the connected PND from TeleNav, is powered by Tele Atlas maps.
