“Appello has grown steadily since 2003 to its current position as the leading provider of complete mobile phone based navigation solutions,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Vishnu Muralidharan. “Wisepilot, a customer-centric mobile navigation service solution launched in 2004, has been backed by superior account management and perceptive strategies, supporting the organic growth of the company.”
Wisepilot is currently available with 11 telecom operators (SFR France, KPN Holland, BT UK, Telia Sweden, Sonera Finland, Telia Denmark, Telenor Sweden, Telenor Norway, A1 Austria, T-Mobile Austria, M-Tel Bulgaria) and two trials are ongoing with Telecom Italia and O2 Ireland.
Appello also provides its solution to an Internet mapping portal (Mappy France) and a Directory search company (Eniro Norway). The Swedish company has signed up its first handset manufacturer, LG Electronics this year and is also launching activities in Africa with Garmap, the exclusive distributor of Garmin products in the region.
Headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, Appello has a staff of only 25 full time employees, is privately held and, while not disclosing its financials, has been profitable for more than a year.
Its Java-based off-board navigation software is running on deCarta’s LBS platform and Appello has developed a core intellectual property called “Device Defragmentation Tool” (DDT). “This is one of our most important intellectual property components”, explained Leif Sundström, vice president and general sales Director at Appello. “This tools handles all the uniqueness with all phones we support (250+ handsets), all different customer versions and all unique set-up and languages. This is a very complex handling and this tool ensures we deliver all these aspects to all of our customers at same time with 100% quality.”
